Understanding Ethiopian Public Holidays
Ethiopia is a deeply cultural and religious country, and its holidays reflect a unique blend of Orthodox Christian, Islamic, and national historical events. Because the country adheres strictly to its own calendarβthe Ethiopian Calendar (Ge'ez calendar)βits holidays are positioned distinctly compared to the rest of the world.
Fixed vs. Floating Holidays
Most Ethiopian national and Orthodox holidays have a fixed date on the Ethiopian Calendar. For example, Enkutatash (Ethiopian New Year) is always Meskerem 1 β which equals September 11 in standard years, or September 12 in Gregorian leap years preceding an Ethiopian leap year.
Islamic holidays (Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, Mawlid, Ramadan) strictly follow the lunar Hijri calendar. Their Gregorian dates regress by approximately 10β11 days each year and require official moon sighting confirmation, so the dates shown here are approximate.
Cultural Significance
Celebrations like Timkat (Epiphany) and Meskel are massive, visually spectacular events inscribed by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritages of Humanity. National holidays like Adwa Victory Day hold immense significance across Africa as a symbol of victorious resistance against colonialism in 1896.
